Students are also likely to experience the fear of being a failure in life, struggling to establish an identity of their own while facing other emotional problems like low self-esteem, anxiety, and stress on a regular basis. A cross institutional study found that stress is the topmost health problem which worries students the most, followed by body image issues, AIDS, physical fitness and cancer (Delene & Brogowich, 1990). The Stanford Survey found psychological distress to be extremely common among the students. 1 out of 3 students described themselves as anxious or tense. As far as depression is concerned, 1 in 5 described themselves as “tired without any apparent reason”. 43 percent reported that they sometimes felt “so depressed it is hard for them to get going” and 16 percent reported feeling that “life is not worth living” (Martinez & Fabiano, 1992). Stress and anxiety have become a part of students' college life. Some studies suggest that stress is necessary for an individual’s growth, but sometimes the amount of stress can be overwhelming and will be beyond his/her ability to cope.en_US
